THE UK's Port of Southampton has ushered in a new system of double docking of two 13,000-TEU ships, now supported by upgraded rail links to the north of England, reports Dredging Today.

Hapag-Lloyd's 13,000-TEU Hamburg Express and the UASC's same-size Jebel Ali, were able to dock at the terminal, which proved itself capable of double berthing, said DP World Southampton managing director Chris Lewis.



"Against this exciting backdrop, we aim to be the container terminal of choice for customers in the UK, and create jobs throughout the supply chain, from quay to supermarket," Mr Lewis said.



DP World Southampton now boasts additional rail capacity out of the port to the Midlands, the North of England and Scotland due to infrastructure upgrades, said the report.
